چکیده

T he effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine–7 (PCV-7) in reducing pneumococcal nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage in very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants has not been studied. Our primary objective was to characterize NP carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in a group of VLBW infants (weight, 4011500 g) before administration of the first PCV-7 vaccine (prevaccine) and at 4 to 6 weeks after a 3-dose PCV-7 primary series (postvaccine). We also investigated the correlation between vaccine-induced pneumococcal IgG antibody level and pneumococcal NP carriage after PCV-7 (postvaccine).

Nasopharyngeal Carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Healthy Children: Implications for the Use of Heptavalent Pnemococcal Conjugate Vaccine

We assessed the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes in the nasopharynx of healthy children, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, risk factors for carriage, and the coverage of heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. In 2,799 healthy infants and children, the S. pneumoniae carrier rate was 8.6% (serotypes 3, 19F, 23F, 19A, 6B, and 14 were most common). Most pneumococci (69.4%)...

Pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage in children following heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination in infancy.

AIMS To ascertain whether the reduction in nasopharyngeal carriage of vaccine serotypes induced by pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PnCV) administered to infants persists beyond the age of 2 years. METHODS Non-randomised, unblinded controlled study of 2-5 year old children who had received three doses of heptavalent PnCV (7VPnCV) in infancy and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine at ...

Changes in Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes in the nasopharynx of Japanese children after inoculation with a heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

In this study, we prospectively investigated changes in Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes among Japanese children after heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) inoculation. We acquired nasopharyngeal swabs from the children at each routine PCV7 inoculation and again at least 2 months after the last PCV7 inoculation. We defined 2 periods with regard to each culture: the inoculation pe...

Impact of Prevnar vaccination on nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in healthy children in New Caledonia

We assessed the impact of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) on the nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in healthy children aged 2 to 24 months, four years after its implementation in New Caledonia. The data were compared with those obtained, before the introduction of the vaccine, in the same target population From February to October 2008, 592 children were ...

Effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on nasopharyngeal carriage in children with early onset of acute otitis media - a randomized controlled trial.

CONCLUSION Although children vaccinated with heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) had fewer episodes of acute otitis media (AOM), this trial was unable to prove a simultaneous decrease in nasopharyngeal carriage. OBJECTIVE Carriage rates of AOM pathogens in the nasopharynx are high among children, and colonization is the first step towards infection. The possible impact of PCV on ...
